Maths is Everywhere!
The Causeway Bay Victoria Kindergarten and International Kindergarten teachers just completed their annual IB Workshop on the Role of Mathematics. Teachers had a fruitful two days of learning and sharing about the different mathematical experiences that are so important to young children. Mathematics expresses itself everywhere, in almost every facet of life, in nature all around us, at school, home and the technologies in our hand. Exposure of high-quality, challenging and accessible mathematics education for early years children is a vital foundation for future mathematics learning.
When we think about supporting children in learning math, there are many things that can be done at school and at home:
-We can try to see things from their point of view by understanding how children see the world will help us to help them as they learn
-Let children be children
-Be a playful companion
-Being aware of our moods and that of our children is helpful to setting a comfortable learning environment
-Perfect is not the key! It's ok to make mistakes, that is the way we all learn
Math should be fun and engaging, if we move away from the worksheets and pencils, we will see a world of ways we can inquire into learning Maths.
