This year we were able to send 2 teachers to Teachers College August Summer Institutes in New York

Pamela Chan

August Writing Institute

I spent this summer a little differently then usual, as I was given the opportunity to attend Columbia University’s Teachers College ‘Summer Writing Institute’. Going with high expectations and eager anticipation, I was prepared for an exciting and thought-provoking trip, and the 5-day institute definitely did not disappoint. Each day we had large and small group sessions where we were taught skills on how to better implement the Reading and Writing Project (TCRWP) in the classroom. Learning first-hand from the staff developers of the project was invaluable, as they have both the theoretical knowledge and practical experience of the curriculum. As I met other TCRWP educators and teachers from around the world, we discussed the challenges we faced and also shared the joy we get from teaching the programme. We definitely all agreed that the programme has made a significant difference to the children’s literacy learning and we have found our students falling in love with reading and writing.

I look forward to bringing my new knowledge into the classrooms at CB Victoria, and grow with the children into keen readers and enthusiastic writers.

August Reading Institute

In August, I spent a week at Columbia University at the Reading Institute learning about the new Units of Study in Phonics, from The Teachers College Reading and Writing Project (TCRWP). I am so excited to now be able to share this new programme with my colleagues and to start teaching it to the children. This phonics programme is a perfect complement to the Reading and Writing Workshops that we are already implementing at Causeway Bay, and will really allow the children to transfer their phonics knowledge into their reading and writing. It is a very engaging and fun programme, which I believe the children will enjoy learning and the teachers will enjoy teaching. During the Institute I also had the opportunity to attend keynote addresses by renowned authors and highly acclaimed teacher educators in the field of literacy.  It was a great learning experience meeting educators from around the world and sharing new ideas and the best practices in the teaching of reading and literacy.
